Lab Rules and Safety

FIRE ALARM

  • If the fire alarm should sound LEAVE the laboratory straight away, don’t start packing up. The lab will be locked; your things will be safe.
  • EXIT the building using the STAIRS at either end of the building, NOT THE LIFT.
  • Go to the ASSEMBLY POINT follow the green signs. The assembly point is just past the DMS Watson Science library.
  • Obey the fire marshals at all times without fail !!!!!

FAULTY EQUIPMENT

  • Report all Faulty Equipment to a technician.
  • If you see smoke or smell burning power down and get help.
  • Don’t swap equipment for a new set and not tell anyone, this causes problems for us and other students, which have to use the equipment.

(THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN TAKING THE WRONG RESULTS DUE TO FAULTY EQUIPMENT)

FIRST AID

  • The nearest first aider is Mr Gerald McBrearty, room 610 ext 33053
  • A large fully stocked first aid pack is in the technicians office 612, smaller ones can be found in 604 and 609

PHONES

  • All phones should be switched off.
  • Switching them off will stop you and other students being distracted in the lab.
  • Active phones can upset some of the experiments like the RF/Microwave equipment at the rear of the laboratory. Also your phones can upset some experiments that you perform in the laboratory, so if your phone is switched on you may get some strange results or extra spikes when you perform a FFT.

COATS AND BAGS

  • Coats should be hung up on the coat stands.
  • Bags go under the desk.
  • This saves room around your work space, helps us get to you if you need help and stops people tripping over/treading on them.

EATING AND DRINKING

  • No food or drink is to be consumed in this laboratory.
  • If you want to take a break and have a drink or a bite to eat that’s OK, there is an area outside the lift or on the ground floor.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • Laboratory sessions generally last from 3 to 6 hours.
  • Arrive on time to all your lab sessions, you only have a limited amount of time in the laboratory.
  • Do not run in the lab.
  • Always ask for help if you get stuck.
  • Tool kits should be kept tidy.
  • Treat the equipment with care, if you damage tools/probes/equipment through misuse then you have no one else to blame but yourself when things go wrong or if we run sort of items.
  • Used components go in the red bins, please throw away any cut wire you use.
