Project Title: Modelling Liquid Crystal Devices
Supervisor: F.A. Fernandez Submitted on: Monday 6th June 2016

The project will be jointly supervised with Sally Day and will consist of using and modifying existing modelling software developed in our group to model liquid crystal structures and devices. The modelling package consists of several parts and one of the tasks in the project will be to design a post-processor or visualiser based on public domain software (Paraview for example) to replace the existing facility and present the results of the modelling part. The modelling work will investigate the behaviour of liquid crystal materials in a particular configuration of current industrial interest for applications in displays and other devices and can include direct collaboration with a company working in this field.
There is scope for students with interest in using the current programs to investigate LC devices and for students interested in computational techniques. The group should ideally have a mixture of these interests.
Depending on students' interests and inclinations, the work can also include investigating the development of a mesh generator (to replace a commercial one now in use) or the use of algorithms that would allow efficient use of parallel computing facilities.
