The Ising code saturates the Shannon limit for information transfer over a noisy transmission line. The architecture of the D-Wave "quantum computer" is naturally suited to decoding the Ising code using maximum likelihood and/or maximum entropy techniques. Students will develop models of transmission using the Ising code on both conventional computing resources and on the D-Wave machine. A comparison between the two will reveal the extent to which quantum mechanics may play a role on the D-Wave machine.
