Project Title: Wireless Data Transmission System for Oil Well Monitoring
Supervisor: Kenneth Tong Submitted on: Thursday 9th April 2015

This project is sponsored by the oil well flow management company Expro. The company is looking at one of its innovative downhole tools, the Cableless Telemetry System (CaTS™), designed and manufactured by Wireless Well Solutions (WWS) in Ringwood, Hampshire. CaTS™ is a battery powered, wireless data transmission system that offers operators advantages in the monitoring and control of both new and existing wells. CaTS™ can be used in any well monitoring application where real‐time data is required. There are two key challenges in this project: firstly, the circuit board will be exposed to extreme temperature conditions and secondly, the expected life of this battery operated tool is frequently in excess of 5 years. This project is therefore to look at how we can refine our existing design to cater for the increasing challenges set by Expro’s customers (operating temperatures beyond 175 C, lifetimes in excess of 10+ years).
Note: Students undertaking this project are expected to finish the paid summer internship support by Expro.
